What Can Heterogeneity Add to the Scientometric Map? Steps towards algorithmic historiography
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction The Actor Network represents heterogeneous entities as actants (Callon et al., 1983; 1986). Although computer programs for the visualization of social networks increasingly allow us to represent heterogeneity in a network using different shapes and colors for the visualization, hitherto this possibility has scarcely been exploited (Mogoutov et al., 2008). In this contribution to the Festschrift, I study the question of what heterogeneity can add specifically to the visualization of a network. How does an integrated network improve on the one-dimensional ones (such as co-word and co-author maps)? The œuvre of Michel Callon is used as the case materials, that is, his 65 papers which can be retrieved from the (Social) Science Citation Index since 1975.

Some Steps Towards a Scientometric Analysis of Publications in Machine Translation
Recently a large variety of evaluation criteria have become necessary prerequisites in academia to allow for proper distribution of (e.g., financial) resources. While many fields have quite some history in evaluating their research in various directions this does not seem to be the case for the field of machine translation (beyond some effectiveness measures). In this paper we raise some questi...
متن کاملThe Role of Algorithmic Applications in the Development of Architectural Forms (Case Study:Nine High-Rise Buildings)
The process of developing architectural forms has greatly been changed by advances in digital technology, especially in design tools and applications. In recent years, the advent of graphical scripting languages in the design process has profoundly affected 3D modeling. Scripting languages help develop algorithms and geometrical grammar of shapes based on their constituent parameters. This stud...
متن کاملWhy do we need algorithmic historiography?
The editor of this special issue, Chaomei Chen, asked us to provide an applications-oriented view of algorithmic historiography and how it relates to understanding scientific paradigms. The first public presentations of our system for algorithmic historiography were given at the University of Pittsburgh (Garfield, 2001a) and then at Drexel University (Garfield, 2001b). In addition, a paper by t...
متن کاملReferenced Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) and Algorithmic Historiography: The Bibliometric Reconstruction of András Schubert's Œuvre
Referenced Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) was recently introduced as a method to analyze the historical roots of research fields and groups or institutions. RPYS maps the distribution of the publication years of the cited references in a document set. In this study, we apply this methodology to the œuvre of an individual researcher on the occasion of a Festschrift for András Schubert’s 70...
متن کاملCreating Algorithmic Symbols to Enhance Learning English Grammar
This paper introduces a set of English grammar symbols that the author has developed to enhance students’ understanding and consequently, application of the English grammar rules. A pretest-posttest control-group design was carried out in which the samples were students in two girls’ senior high schools (N=135, P ≤ 0.05) divided into two groups: the Treatment which received gramm...
